Employment Opportunities

School districts have enormous resources If you are a new teacher, or are in your last year of college and expect your certification by next year, this might be the type of job to help you get started in the job market. You are able to network by working within various districts. You can gain more experience with your subject matter as well as your teaching skills. You can make some extra money!

The variety of services we offer to districts defies any one job description. Most of the positions that become available are for home instruction. However, in general, this much is true: The work is part-time and based upon demand. You can set your own hours (within limits) and can take only the work you are comfortable with.

Since the work is based upon demand, there may be no work for you when you apply. Upon acceptance of your application, you will be put on our roster and called when the need arises. The rate of pay is variable. In the case of home instruction , each district has an amount that they pay per hour to teachers. We pay our teachers approximately 70% of this rate. Currently, this means you may be receiving $15 - $30 per hour. The average wage we paid last year for home instruction was about $17 per hour. Other types of work such as teaching small groups, participating in alternative programs, private tutoring, business training programs may pay as much as $50 per hour. If the district gives us an increase, that increase is proportionately passed along to you. You would be an employee of Top Grade, so it is required that we withhold taxes for you. Payroll is sent out by the 12th of each month for the previous month. For instance, if you work any time in the month of September, your check will be mailed by October 12th at the latest.

Types of Positions

Home Instruction

Home instruction is required when a student is unable to attend school. This is usually due to illness or suspension. New York State mandates that home instruction be provided immediately for any student who is suspended from school. Policies differ from district to district, but generally children who are out of school due to illness are placed on home instruction after missing 1 or 2 weeks of school. Each secondary student receives one 2 hour session per week for each subject for a total of 10 hours. (Elementary students receive 5 hours/week.) Some teachers tutor 2, 3, 4 or 5 subjects with the same student. We will never require you to tutor any subject you are not comfortable with. The schools are supposed to supply you with the work & materials and you are expected to pick them up and drop them off at the school periodically.

Tutoring is usually done at the home or the local library. If the student does not show up for an appointment, you will be paid for 1 hour only if you notify our office right away. If tutoring is done in the home, an adult must be present.

A student may be on home instruction for any length of time. Some of our teachers spend the entire school year with the same student.
